Edge-On Views of Different Holders

In order to achieve higher tilt ranges, some of the specimen holders in the EMC are manufactured so that the areas of the holder around the grid that are normal to the tilt axis are "chopped out" to prevent the holder from blocking the electron beam at high tilt. This collection of images show this effect for some of our holders.

The Gatan 914 cryo-tomography holder has been trimed to allow for high tilt. This also makes it fairly easy to bend the tip of the holder that extends past this narrowing.

The Fischione 2040 dual tilt axis tomography holder has been trimed to allow for high tilt. This also makes it fairly easy to bend the tip of the holder that extends past this narrowing.

The Gatan 626 cryo-holder has not been trimed to allow for high tilt. This holder is relatively broad and bulky, and can only be tilted to low angles in the JEOL JEM 3200FS.
