Mailing Lists

Mailing Lists

The Electron Microscopy Center (EMC) has created curated e-mail lists to make communication with our different users easier. We are using the campus list server framework (called Sympa) to host these groups, and lots of information about how such lists work can be found at the Sympa webpage:

View or host IU Mailing Lists with Sympa

The above link leads both to details about how the e-mail list server works and can also be used to look at the mailing lists that the EMC has created.

There are mailing lists for each of the microscopes: users of the JEOL JEM 1010 (EMC-1010-USERS-L), users of the JEOL JEM 1400plus (EMC-1400plus-USERS-L), users of the JEOL JEM 3200FS (EMC-3200-USERS-L), users of the Thermo-Fisher Teneo and VolumeScope (EMC-TENEO-USERS-L) and users of the Thermo-Fisher Talos Arctica (EMC-ARCTICA-USERS-L).  There is a group for all the users of the facility (EMC-ALL-USERS-L) and one specifically for only the faculty (EMC-FACULTY-L).

Anyone can send e-mail which will be distributed to everyone on the lists to these addresses.  Remember to add the @indiana.edu when using them, and that a list moderator must approve any messages sent to the entire list.  Here is another page with additional information about all the mailing lists.

Some of the most basic things you need to know about the EMC mailing lists are as follows:

Subscribe to a Mailing List

To subscribe to any of the EMC mailing lists, send an empty e-mail to

LIST@LIST.INDIANA.EDU

and use this sort of message in the subject line:

SUBSCRIBE LISTNAME FirstName LastName

NOTE: There is no need to capitalize any of these letters.

An example of a valid subject line would be:

subscribe emc-3200-users-l Leonardo DaVinci

which would subscribe "Leonardo DaVinci" to the 3200FS mailing list with the e-mail address that sent the message. Any user can subscribe to these mailing lists with multiple e-mail addresses by sending this message from different e-mail addresses.

Unsubscribe from a Mailing List

To unsubscribe from any of the EMC mailing lists, send an empty e-mail to

LIST@LIST.INDIANA.EDU

and use this sort of message in the subject line:

UNSUBSCRIBE LISTNAME

NOTE: Again, there is no need to capitalize any of these letters.

An example of a valid subject line would be:

unsubscribe emc-faculty-l

which would unsubscribe whatever e-mail address was used to send the message from the faculty mailing list. If a user has multiple subscriptions to any of the mailing lists, this would have to be done from each of those e-mail accounts.

Send Messages to a List

Anyone can send a message to any of the mailing lists using the following sort of e-mail address:

LISTNAME@INDIANA.EDU

NOTE: Again, there is no need to capitalize any of these letters.

An example of a valid address would be:

emc-1010-users-l@indiana.edu

which would send an e-mail to everyone who uses the EMC. This sort of e-mail message can be sent even when the sender is not a member of the mailing list.

Contact the List-Master

If all of the above doesn't seem to work or seems too complicated, it is always possible to contact the people who oversee the mailing lists. At present, the list-master is David Morgan. Just send him an e-mail at dagmorga@indiana.edu to ask questions or request actions, and he will help solve problems related to the mailing lists.
