Outreach Efforts in 2024
Classes
- M435 (Viral Tissue Culture Laboratory, Spring Semester)
Barry Stein gave tours of the Myers Hall EMC area, specifically the JEOL 1010 and the ultramicrotomes. The course was organized by Prof. Suchetana Mukhopadhyay in Biology. - Z620 & B680 (Electron Microscopy, Spring Semester)
Barry Stein, Giovanni Gonzalez-Gutierrez and David Morgan taught an eight week graduate level course on biological electron microscopy. The course was held the second half of the spring semester and is designed so that students can take a separate eight week course on light microscopy (taught by Prof. Sid Shaw and Andras Kun). - M316 (Molecular Biology Laboratory, Fall Semester)
Barry Stein gave tours of the Myers Hall EMC area, specifically the JEOL 1010 and the ultramicrotomes. The course was organized by Prof. Irene Newton in Biology.
Meetings
- July 28 - August 1
Jun Chen and Barry Stein attended the 2024 Microscopy and Microanalysis (M&M) meeting in Cleveland, OH. - October 21-22
David Morgan attended the annual meeting of the Mid-West Association of Core Directors (MWACD) in Louisville, KY. MWACD is the midwest chapter of ABRF (the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities), an international organization that brings together administrators, directors and staff of core facilities involved in biological research at various universities, research institutes and companies. This year's annual meeting included tours of facilities at the University of Louisville and an opening reception in the nearby Muhammad Ali Center.
Presentations
- May 2
David Morgan gave a guest lecture in Prof. Marc Morais's B680 course (Biological CryoEM) on the power of coherent diffraction in images acquired using the electron microscope. - October 22
David Morgan chaired a session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the annual meeting of the Mid-West Association of Core Directors (MWACD) in Louisville, KY. The session dealt with both AI in general and also some specific examples of ways AI can help with both the administration and the running of research facilities.
