High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy Examples

Here is a small collection of high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images of various metallic nano-particles. All these images have all been recorded using the JEOL JEM 3200FS with either the JEOL standard room temperature holder or the JEOL high tilt retainer (HTR).

Untilted High Magnification Images of "Gold Islands"

The image shown below is part of a larger image that was recorded at a magnification of 500,000x (~627,000x at the plane of the CCD) using the JEOL standard single tilt, room temperature retainer. The displayed image is unbinned and clearly shows the lattice spacing of the gold atoms in these (poly)crystalline islands of gold.

These next two images were recorded at 1,000,000x (~1250,000x at the plane of the CCD) using the standard room temperature hold The full image (binned by 5 to fit on this page) is shown in each case. The first image was recorded by Dave Dillner, one of our JEOL service engineers during some routine maintenance work in June, 2014.

This final image of (poly)crystalline gold was recorded at 1,500,000x by David Morgan in February of 2015 using (nearly) parallel electron illumination and XXX
