photo of JEOL JSM 5800LV

The JEOL JSM 5800LV retired from the IU Bloomington EMC and was sent to IU Kokomo. Anyone who needs the large sample chamber on this SEM should contact Christian Chauret, Dean of the School of Sciences at IUK.

The 5800LV is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) similar to the one shown in this image. Our SEM can operate at magnifications from 18x to 300,000x and with an accelerating voltage of 0.3 to 30 kV. It can also operate in both a high-vacuum and a low-vacuum mode. The low-vacuum mode allows imaging of samples with higher water content, though at the cost of lowered resolution (3.5 nm resolution in high-vaccum mode vs 5.5 nm resolution in low-vacuum mode).

The large sample chamber can hold as many as seven normal SEM samples using the rotating sample holder, or a single sample as large as 8 inches in diameter. This large sample chamber is the only SEM on campus capable of holding such large objects.
